Roland AtelierLandmark Organ Sound, Performance, and Luxury
I have spent many hours creating registrations that are specific to a particular song, agonizing over the perfect tweak that will give the performance that emotional response from the listener that we long for. Recently, I spent five years as the organist for the Tampa Bay Lightning hockey team, spending most of my week working on the set ups for my five minutes of fame. Needless to say, it wasn’t much fun. I realized one day that I started with a rhythm, then worked on registrations for each preset I would use, and generally would use four presets nearly every time. I also realized my setups were nearly identical for any given type of song.
After the new Roland Artist Edition came out it struck me. I really love the One Touch Program feature! It saves so much time and effort, and I have more time to enjoy playing the Atelier. If you’re like me and play all your own pedals, just select a pedal sound and it will remain on throughout the preset changes.
Now, when I’m feeling especially creative, I make groups of registrations first and choose the rhythm I want later. I’ve shared a set of presets I designed for ballads, using a slow rhythm from any category. They are grouped in presets of four with upper and solo to lower registrations that work with anything. You will find Harmony Intelligence in some presets that still sound great even when using more than one finger! The solo voices are not always the most common ones, and you will find beautiful blending of tones including the Erhu, Bandoneon, Space Pad, and Mystic Strings among others.
Just load the registrations on any Roland Atelier, push and hold preset one for a few seconds to load the backing orchestra, and play! You can change the background to any slow rhythm you choose. The Arranger Update is set to “delayed” so all presets will work with your own preferred music style.
Take it from Johnny O and you will sound like a pro every time!
Have Fun.
