The scene. We are in Trinidad, an island located just north of Venezuela in the Caribbean Sea.
The birthplace of Calypso, Soca and Steel bands, Trinidad’s festivals are part of the islanders lives and the Limbo ‘under the pole’ dance (though not named Limbo by the islanders) — represents a dance of the cycle of life.
Play all four presets 8VA (an octave above Middle C)
First Preset: Is the traditional light and airy steel drums. Play single notes an octave above middle C for the best representation ofthree steel drum musicians– playing in harmony with one and other.Imagine everyone lining up to participate by dancing under a lowering pole. (Limbo was the name given to this island dance in 1950 by anglos… and derived from the word Limber!)
Second Preset: After the first verse of Limbo, engage this presetand LET GO OF ALL KEYS- You’ll heara drum solo appropriately placedin the song. If you wish, just letyou Atelier island drummer play while you sit back and listen, or you can contribute bits of music here and there.
For example: To join the drummer – play any key on the bottom octave of the lower manual and hear your own drum contribution. Tap the different drum keys in time with the beat. Or… to lead a chorus of island children in song, play the verse of the song on the lower Solo keyboard. Finally, play a bit on the upper keyboard to hear marimbas join in. Preset two is the only preset that does not require left hand chords of any kindwhile you contribute to the melody– You’re playing with drums only - no chords. JUST HAVE FUN!
Third Preset: The steel drum players give way to a mix ofan island flute and guitaron the upper manual. While playing on the upper manual, try bridging (reaching down to the lower solo manual) to bring exotic birds into the mix. Note there will also be steel guitars in your left hand chord. Strikeyour chord extra timesin time with the beat if you want to bring them out.
Forth Preset: Everyone joins in playing and singing as the Limbo turns from a festival competition into a full blown parade in the streets of Trinidad! When you are ready to end the song, drop back to the third preset flute player, and fade away as the parade and revelers move on.
