Roland AtelierLandmark Organ Sound, Performance, and Luxury
With the new Atelier models offering the option to save performances as audio files or allowing the user to burn a CD, we are often asked when to “Record as Audio” and when to “Record as SMF” (Standard MIDI File).
Recording audio files certainly has advantages, like being able to include vocal performance, and the fact that WAV files and CDs are playable in so many different devices.
The audio files created by your Atelier can be played back on your computer, emailed, or even played on your iPod™ or similar device.
CDs created on your Atelier can be played in your car or home stereo…or even mailed to friends and family.
This all begs the question, “Why would I ever want to record a SMF file?”
While an audio file is a “one pass” recording, a MIDI file can be layered and manipulated. For example, after recording a SMF you can speed it up, slow it down, change the key, or even change the sounds. All of this can be accomplished without having to re-record your performance.
You can then playback your performance, and simultaneously record added “layers” of sound or “punch-in/punch-out” to correct a wrong note or two.
When you have your song perfected… the Artist Edition models allow you to play back your SMF file while simultaneously recording it as an audio file. Then just touch “Burn to CD” in the file menu and, in a few moments, your performance will be part of your very own CD.
Tip: Another fun thing to do is to make an audio recording while playing along with a VIMA Tune®. Your friends and family will be so impressed.
